Toothbrushing & fluoride for ages 3-5
By age 3, most children will have all 20 baby teeth. If not, consult a dentist. Around age 4, gaps between teeth may appear naturally to make room for adult teeth.
At this stage, switch to a family toothpaste with 1350-1500 ppm fluoride. Use a pea-sized amount and brush with gentle circular motions, focusing on the back teeth and gum line. Ensure they "spit, don’t rinse" after brushing. Supervise brushing until age 7-8, as children lack the skills to do it effectively alone.
Benefits of fluoride
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and reduces acid production. In areas where it's added to water, tooth decay is reduced by up to 60%. Children aged 3+ should receive fluoride varnish treatments at least twice a year, offered for free at dental clinics.
