Welcome to {my}dentist, Ashington dental practice. Our Friendly local practice offers a wide range of dental services, both NHS and private treatment. Our clinicians have a wealth of experience enabling them to provide advice and treatment on all aspects of dental care. From general dentistry to hygienist services, cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, teeth whitening and straightening. Ashington dental practice operates from a two storey building with seven surgeries. Access to the reception, waiting area and four surgeries is located on the ground floor, there is a purpose built ramp to accommodate wheelchair access into the building. There is a main bus station close by and a large free car park to the rear of the building. The Ashington dental practice team are ready to help you.

    "Mixed first impressions, the waiting room is very clean and tidy plenty of seats. The receptionist told me I could have an appointment next day which was amazing because I had an abscess. However they then informed me that the appointment would only be a check up as a new patient unless I paid £50 for a private tooth pain appointment. I declined the £50 and told them I'd manage with painkillers until I could be seen normally after the check up. Next day I arrived for my appointment with Chris Kardos. He could not have been nicer. He took one look at my tooth and decided regardless of the appointment type it needed to go. Kind, caring and professional thought he and his nurse did an amazing job and had the little blighter out with minimal effort and zero pain. Best of all it was all covered under my exemption. Not sure if it was crossed wires or what. Couldn't recommend the practice, and Chris specifically, highly enough. Many thanks."

  • Dr.Andrea Shauneen Mulvenna Qualified from: BDS Belfast, 2020 GDC No: 290669
    Andrea, originally from the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland, graduated from Queens university Belfast 2020. After graduation Andrea moved to Newcastle and has been working in {my}dentist Ashington ever since. She is passionate about working with patients to improve their oral health whilst putting patients at ease. Andrea is keen to always keep up to date with dental knowledge by attending courses, most recently a course focusing on anterior composites. In her spare time she loves being active including the gym, running and all things outdoors. Andrea has recently completed her first marathon in Edinburgh May 2024.
  • Dr.James Goodman (Dental Implant Surgeon) Qualified from: BDS Newcastle, United Kingdom, 2000 GDC No: 77862
    James graduated from Newcastle University in 2000 and has worked across a number of practices providing both NHS and Private dentistry. James strives to improve the oral health of his patients and build confidence with those who are dental phobic, giving them all the confidence to smile. In 2011 he completed the highly regarded ‘One to One’ Implant course at the University of Sheffield and has been providing implant dentistry to a very high standard since. James has a passion for cosmetic dentistry and is an established provider of Invisalign, a virtually invisible, removable solution for those wanting to straighten their teeth. He now focuses his time on providing private cosmetic dentistry and offers complimentary consultations for those wanting smile makeovers, implants and orthodontic treatments. James lives in Newcastle with his wife, daughter and dog and in his spare time, enjoys being active, making time for fell walking and mountain biking.
  • Dr.Katie Lousie Travers Qualified from: BDS Ncle 2018 England, 2018 GDC No: 277955
    Katie, originally from Barrow-In-Furness, graduated from Newcastle School of Dental Sciences in 2018. Since graduation she has been a part of the Ashington {my}dentist team, helping patients maintain and obtain beautiful smiles by providing high standards of care. She enjoys all aspects of dentistry, taking pride in being able to care and manage all kinds of patients. The treatments she can provide are straightening with ClearCorrect and whitening, plus other aspects of restorative dentistry. She is also a member of the British Dental Association (BDA). She is committed to furthering her knowledge and skills and regularly attends postgraduate continuing development. Outside of dentistry, she is a powerlifter holding regional records and competes at a national level.
  • Dr.Nicola Appleby Qualified from: BDS Ncle 2009 England, 2009 GDC No: 177562
    Nicola grew up in Cambridge and graduated from Newcastle University in 2009, undertaking further training in the Dental Hospital. She has worked at the practice since leaving the hospital in 2011. She has completed qualifications including MFDS from the Royal College of Surgeons and the Certificate in teaching and learning in Medical Practice from UcLan. She is an Educational Supervisor for Health Education North East and has mentored newly qualified dentists since 2015. Nicola is keen to help improve the oral health and confidence of her patients, particularly children, encouraging good oral health habits from an early age. She has attended a number of courses and provides aesthetic braces to help improve your smile. Nicola uses the Quick Straight Teeth and Clear Correct systems to straighten your teeth and combines this with whitening and bonding to give you the smile you have always dreamed of.
  • Miss.Amanda Reynolds (Therapist) Qualified from: Higher Education Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy England, 2012 GDC No: 136187
    Amanda began her career in dentistry in our Ashington practice as a Trainee Dental Nurse back in 2005. She continued her studies to complete a Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy in 2012 in Newcastle and is a member of The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT), The British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (BSP) and The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD). Amanda is passionate about preventative care and will offer all her patients, young and old, bespoke educational sessions on how to best look after their mouth, with tailored treatment in a calm environment. In Amanda's spare time she will usually be exploring the great outdoors and thrives from time in nature. When she's forced indoors, Amanda enjoys yoga, experimenting in the kitchen, and playing with her mischievous cats, Milo and Marcy.
  • Miss.Laura Underhill Qualified from: BDS Birmingham United Kingdom, 2024 GDC No: 318580
    Laura grew up in Kent and graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2024. Following graduation Laura joined our {my}dentist Ashington team in September 2024 and has fitted right in. She enjoys all aspects of dentistry and getting to know her patients so she can deliver personalised care to the highest standard. Laura is looking forward to progressing her career and is committed to furthering her dental knowledge. Away from dentistry, Laura likes to relax by getting outside enjoying the outdoors horse riding and is a keen runner. She spends time with her family whenever possible even if it is a bit of a journey!
  • Mrs.Ashley Susanne Shanks (Hygienist) Qualified from: CEB Dip Dent Hygiene 1997 England, 1997 GDC No: 5308
    Ashley qualified as a dental hygienist from Newcastle in 1997. She has been with the Ashington practice since 2018, she is dedicated to her patients along with the team to provide the best care she can. She loves talking to patients and helping them overcome any dental anxiety. She has worked in general practice providing both NHS and private treatment across Newcastle and the surrounding area. You may be referred to see Ashley from one of our dentists on the NHS, as an adult for periodontal treatment. However, if you would like to have a clean or stain removal that is not necessary on the NHS you can book a private appointment through direct access. Out of work she likes nothing more than spending time with her family, 4 grown children have kept her busy over the years!

What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a fixed solution for missing teeth that are the closest possible replacement for natural teeth. They involve one or more titanium screws being inserted into your jawbone to mimic a natural tooth root. Dental crowns are securely attached to these to fill the gaps in your mouth. Because dental implants are securely anchored in your jaw you’ll have the confidence to comfortably eat whatever you like.

  • Consultation Your initial consultation will be with either our Implant Surgeon or Treatment Coordinator (TCO), who can discuss the different types of implants, single or multiple depending on your need. Following this there may be a need for a more clinical focused consultation.

  • Diagnostic Scans We will carry out a number of digital scans, to build a digital 3D model of your mouth so we can get a clear picture of the area we will place the implant, and a more detailed X-ray using a Cone Beam Computer Tomography scanner so that our Implant surgeon can assess the state of the bone below the gum to get a really clear picture of your treatment need.

  • Treatment Plan Once our experienced implant surgeon has assessed all of you scans they will explain the nature of your treatment, the stages involved and costs. We offer flexible payment options to make implants even more affordable.

  • Commence Treatment Once you are happy we will begin treatment. The length and numbers of appointments will vary depending on the complexity of your particular need, but your Implant Surgeon will have detailed all of this in your treatment plan.

  • Implant Placed Once the implant(s) are placed it may be necessary it might be necessary to allow time for healing before attaching the replacement teeth. Once we are happy the implant has healed we will arrange a series of appointments to fabricate the replacement teeth.

  • Aftercare Your Implant Surgeon will advise you about looking after your implant and may well give you some painkillers to help with the pain over the days after your surgery as well as detailed advice about cleaning the implants and the teeth attached to them.
