Under 18's braces

It’s common for orthodontic treatment to begin in the teenage years, once all or most of the permanent teeth have come through. At that point it becomes clear whether someone might have dental concerns such as significant crowding, an over or underbite, or difficulty biting the teeth together which might affect eating or properly cleaning the teeth.

In cases where these issues are significant, braces will be available on the NHS. They assess who will receive braces according to a scoring system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need, or IOTN score.

Some teens may not meet the IOTN score, in which case the NHS treatment is not available, or the waiting list in their area may be very long meaning they are unable to start treatment quickly. That is why we have a range of affordable private orthodontic treatments available for teenagers.

    Metal fixed appliances consist of small metal brackets attached to the teeth with a wire tied into the brackets. The wires are then used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist control over the tooth movements. The ties can be coloured giving you the option to customise the brace.

    Iconix braces are a sophisticated and elegant alternative to traditional braces. These braces are made of stainless-steel champagne-coloured brackets that provide aesthetics of rose gold attached to the teeth with a wire tied into the brackets. The wires are then used to move the teeth into the desired position giving the orthodontist control over the tooth movements.

    Clear aligners offer a virtually invisible way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, customised removable aligners that fit snugly over your teeth. Advanced technology allows you to visualise your completed treatment. This is a great option for those wanting a more discreet, wire free treatment.

All mydentist patients have their treatment overseen by a UK registered dentist. We will make sure that your teeth and overall oral health are in good shape before we start teeth straightening and check in with you regularly to make sure that the treatment is progressing as planned. That means you can rest assured that at the end of treatment your teeth will look and feel great.     Alex began her career as a dental nurse qualifying in 2013. In the following years she furthered her expertise by completing her radiography in 2014, Oral health in 2015 and her Orthodontic nursing in 2017. Alex’s commitment to delivering perfect smiles continued and she progressed onto a Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy with the Royal College of Surgeons of England which she accomplished in 2023. Alex joined our Brinsworth, Rotherham and Sheffield practices in 2020. Covering all aspects of teeth straightening Alex works with NHS and private patients, fixed braces, ceramic, Invisalign and retention. Alex prides herself on her exceptional precision and thoroughness with our patients. She works alongside our highly credentialed orthodontists leaving no stone unturned.     Dr. Caroline McCarthy is a Specialist Orthodontist with us at Brinsworth and Rotherham. She is also a Orthodontic Consultant at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. Alongside this she was also a consultant in Doncaster for 14 years. Caroline qualified in 1997 and worked in general and children’s dentistry. She then became a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery and obtained her first Master’s degree in Oral Surgery in 2000. With continuing progression, she then undertook specialist training in 2003 at the Royal London Hospital and Essex County Hospital where she achieved her second Masters in Orthodontics. In 2004 she gained Membership in Orthodontics, from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Caroline is dedicated to ensuring the best patient outcomes and experiences for her patients. She covers all aspects of teeth straightening, including, fixed metal braces, tooth coloured braces, Invisalign, retention, functional appliances and other fixed and removable braces. Here at our Rotherham practices we ensure that a happy smile is available for everyone and we offer payment plans including interest free braces.     Jamie first qualified as a dental nurse in 1997 working in a general dental practice, and she was promptly promoted to head nurse. In 2003 Jamie joined us at our practices in Rotherham and Sheffield, where she gained further qualifications in Radiography and Orthodontic Nursing. Jamie continued her development and accomplished a Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy from the Royal College of Surgeons England 2010. Jamie takes great satisfaction in her role as a Orthodontic Therapist and is enthusiastic about the beautiful outcomes we achieve together as a team. Jamie covers all aspects of teeth straightening, fixed braces, Invisalign, aligners, retention and more. Outside of work Jamie is a busy mother who enjoys getting outdoors and spending time with her boys.

Abigail works across Yorkshire at our Rotherham and Sheffield practices ensuring the best quality care for children and adults with braces. She thoroughly enjoys working with our Orthodontic patients, whether they have, Invisalign, fixed metal braces, ceramic tooth coloured braces and many more. She loves seeing the beautiful smiles our team have worked hard together to make happen. In her space time she loves to travel and spending time with her friends.   • Mrs.Hannah Kyte (Orthodontic Therapists) Qualified from: Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh 2009 National Certificate NEBDN 2003 UK, 2009 GDC No: 111498
    Hannah qualified as a dental nurse in 2003 at Sheffield College. She started working in specialist Orthodontics in 2004 as a dental nurse, where she progressed and gained her radiography and Orthodontic nursing post qualifications. Hannah then continued to excel and gained a placement on the first Manchester Orthodontic Therapy course in 2007. In 2009 she earnt her Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy at the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. Hannah enjoys working with fixed braces, ceramic braces and Invisalign. Through the years she has worked with some of the best Orthodontists and has experience we value highly. Hannah now covers our Rotherham centre and Brinsworth practices.     Dr. Tania Murphy is a Specialist Orthodontist covering our, Rotherham centre, Brinsworth and Scunthorpe practices. Tania qualified as a Dentist in 1996 from the University of Sheffield, she continued to develop her expertise and obtained her first Master’s degree in Oral Surgery in 1999. She then became a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery in 2000. This was quickly followed by the achievement of her second Masters degree in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons, England. In 2005 she then achieved the Fellowship in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England for Orthodontics. After 16 years working as an NHS Orthodontic Consultant Tania stepped down from this role. Tania specialises in all aspects of teeth straightening, from fixed metal braces, tooth coloured braces, Invisalign, retention, functional appliances and other fixed and removable braces. She prides herself on working with the best orthodontic systems on the market to ensure exceptional treatment outcomes.
