Charity work is more than an act of kindness for the team at mydentist Formby - it’s part of who they are. Led by Practice Manager Amanda Morris, who has worked within dentistry for over 30 years, the team has long been dedicated to giving back, raising money for causes close to their hearts and, most recently, volunteering with Dentaid to provide care to vulnerable communities. We caught up with Amanda to learn more about what inspires her, and her team, to dedicate their team time to such incredible causes.
The inspiration behind mydentist Formby's charity work
For Amanda, this passion for helping others stems from the team itself, she commented: "Formby is an extremely charitable team. We're inspired by each other—our experiences, life stories and backgrounds. That passion for helping others has been present for as long as I can remember."
This commitment to charity has seen the team support a variety of initiatives over the years, including young people's mental health charities, dementia research, cancer research and food banks in Liverpool. Their most recent efforts involved working with Dentaid to provide dental care to refugees and asylum seekers at Asylum Link Merseyside. Over two days, the team treated more than 20 patients, relieving pain and restoring dignity for individuals who might otherwise have gone without care.
Amanda continued: "It’s important that we offer support to vulnerable communities within dentistry. Working with charities like Dentaid are a way of demonstrating that we genuinely care about people. I wanted to give something back to show that Liverpool is a friendly, kind place to be, and that they matter."
Creating connections with the local community
mydentist practice teams up and down the country know the importance of building solid connections to the communities they look after. It's a key part of providing outstanding patient care to everyone who trusts mydentist to look after their dental health. That's why we're blown away with mydentist Formby's commitment to their local community.
Amanda commented: "The sincere thanks from the patients we treated will stay with me for a long time. After two days, I felt immense pride knowing we had made a difference— that these patients were no longer in pain and had been treated with kindness and compassion. Their parting blessings were unforgettable."
Getting to the know the team – inside and outside the practice
Charity work has also brought the Formby team closer together. Whether fundraising for animal rescue centres or supporting charities like Dentaid, these shared experiences foster connection and collaboration.
Amanda commented: "We strengthen our bond by helping others. It gives us a tremendous sense of achievement when we fundraise as a group. We've even encouraged each other to donate blood. After I attended a session last year, I suggested it to some of the nurses, and they joined me. Now, we have five more nurses booked in for February 2025."
The impact of these efforts extends beyond charity work. Amanda believes it shapes the way the team approaches their day-to-day roles, she added: "It’s important to us that we’re recognised as a practice that not only provides a five-star service to our patients but also has a huge heart, supporting those less fortunate."
What's next for mydentist Formby?
mydentist Formby's charitable spirit shows no signs of slowing down. They have exciting plans for the future, including fundraising for Freshfield Animal Rescue this Christmas and organising a practice sports day in the spring to support 3 Dads Walking, a charity raising awareness of young people’s suicide. Amanda is also proud to share the lasting impact of their recent work with Dentaid: "Four nurses and a dentist from Formby have signed up as Dentaid volunteers. I’m thrilled to see our team so inspired to continue making a difference."
Amanda encourages other mydentist practices to consider getting involved in similar initiatives and commented: "Go for it! Having such a positive, fun team like we do in Formby encourages us to always do more for others as well as for each other."
