At mydentist, we believe that giving back to our local communities is as important as providing outstanding dental care in our practices. This year, teams across the UK have gone above and beyond by supporting charities, raising funds and lending their expertise to make a meaningful difference. As we approach the festive season, we’re excited to share some of the incredible initiatives that have brought smiles to so many in 2024.
Miles for Smiles: Cycling to support oral health
In July, Ingrid Perry MBE and Carrie Regis, two dedicated mydentist team members, embarked on an inspiring challenge in East Yorkshire: cycling through local communities dressed as tooth fairies. Their mission? To raise funds to provide toothbrushes and toothpaste to children living in areas of social deprivation.
Ingrid, Prevention Lead at mydentist and a passionate advocate for oral health education, and Carrie, a mydentist Oral Health Area Champion, highlighted the impact of access to basic dental care. Each oral health pack costs just £1.40, and thanks to their efforts, they aimed to raise £1,000 to provide over 700 children with the tools they need to maintain a good toothbrushing routine.
The duo’s dedication goes beyond fundraising—they’re working to ensure children see toothbrushing as part of their daily routine, reducing preventable dental issues and building lifelong habits. Their journey, complete with fairy wings and crowns, was a testament to how creativity and compassion can create lasting change.
Making a difference at mydentist Formby
Charity work is at the heart of the mydentist Formby team. Led by Practice Manager Amanda Morris, the team has supported numerous causes, from mental health initiatives to food banks. This year, they partnered with Dentaid to deliver essential dental care to refugees and asylum seekers at Asylum Link Merseyside. Over two days, the team treated more than 20 patients, relieving pain and restoring smiles.
Amanda explained, “It’s important that we offer support to vulnerable communities within dentistry. Working with charities like Dentaid demonstrates that we genuinely care about people.”
The Formby team’s efforts don’t stop there. They’ve encouraged each other to give blood, organised local fundraisers, and even have plans for a practice sports day to support 3 Dads Walking, a charity raising awareness of young people’s mental health. Their inspiring work shows how small acts of kindness can create ripples of change in the community.
Helping patients smile in Uganda
Dr Humnah Javid, an associate dentist at mydentist Glossop, took her commitment to giving back global. In partnership with Dentaid, she travelled to Uganda to provide dental care to underserved rural communities. Over two and a half weeks, Humnah and her team set up clinics in schools, orphanages, and community centres, delivering essential care and building connections with local dentists.
Reflecting on her experience, Humnah shared: “It was one of the best things I’ve ever done. It not only improved my clinical skills but also taught me new ways to communicate and adapt to challenging situations.”
Humnah’s journey highlighted the importance of access to dental care - especially in the most remote regions. Her dedication has inspired many of her colleagues to explore similar opportunities to give back through their work.
Support Centre Christmas food drive
At our Support Centre, the spirit of giving is alive and well this Christmas. Recognising the struggles faced by families during the festive season, the team organised a food and toiletries drive to support their local food bank. From tinned goods to Christmas treats, their contributions aim to bring a little extra cheer to those in need this holiday season.
Team members were encouraged to donate items such as UHT milk, tinned meat, and toiletries, ensuring families—and even their pets—could feel supported. It’s a wonderful reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.
Looking ahead - What's next for mydentist in 2025?
While these stories highlight some of the incredible charitable efforts from across mydentist this year, they represent just a small selection of the amazing work being done.
Across the entire mydentist network, countless individuals and teams are dedicating their time, skills, and compassion to support a variety of causes close to their hearts. From organising local fundraisers to volunteering their time and expertise, our people are making a real difference in their communities every day. Their commitment to helping others truly embodies the spirit of mydentist, and we couldn’t be prouder of the positive impact they continue to have.
We’re immensely proud of everyone who has contributed to making a difference this year, whether it’s through cycling in fairy wings, volunteering their skills, or donating much-needed supplies. Together, we’ve proven that when we unite as one, we can achieve amazing things. As we celebrate the incredible charitable efforts of 2024, we’re also looking forward to what’s next.
