At mydentist, we know that professional growth doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes guidance, experience and a supportive network to help dental professionals develop their skills and confidence. That’s why our mentorship programme is at the heart of what we do, offering dentists the structure and encouragement they need to take the next step in their careers.
With a network of over 360 mentors, we provide comprehensive training to ensure experienced professionals can share their knowledge and support the next generation. Our structured approach includes online clinical development, engagement with our expert clinical team and an externally accredited two-day training course. This ensures mentees have a smooth transition into practice, building both their technical expertise and their professional confidence.
Meet our mentors and mentees
In the first episode of Know the Drill, we spoke with some of our experienced mentors and mentees to hear how the programme has helped them grow.
- Matt Arnold – One of our mentor clinical development advisors in the northeast, Matt helps oversee mentorship programmes and has trained numerous clinicians. When asked why he wanted to become a mentor, Matt commented: "I was always encouraged to do it because I was quite passionate about teaching, always liking to help my colleagues out."
- Anita Josie – A regional dentist based in Sunderland, Anita was a mentee under Matt Arnold and credits mentorship for helping her bridge the gap between theory and hands-on practice, when asked about her experience, Anita commented: "The clinical experience I have now, I think I got it mostly from the mentorship programme because it helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice."
- Assad Shah – An associate dentist who trained under mydentist’s mentorship programme after graduating from Eastern Europe. Assad highlights the importance of having expert guidance in those crucial early years. As a clinician who qualified overseas, when asked about his experience of the mydentist mentorship programme, Assad commented: "I really wanted that safety net - someone to guide me in the right direction, someone to bounce ideas off."
Training and support that makes a difference
At mydentist, mentorship is more than just advice - it’s about structured support, shared experiences and ongoing learning. Our mentors receive dedicated training through webinars, e-learning modules and face-to-face development days. These sessions allow them to refine their skills, share insights and help shape the careers of new clinicians.
A key feature of our programme is the annual refresher training, ensuring mentors stay up to date with the latest industry practices. Our two-day mentor training course is particularly valuable, offering a deep dive into effective teaching methods and real-world applications. Many mentors, including Matt Arnold, have even returned to the course to gain fresh perspectives: "The course was brilliant. I actually went back and did it again just because I got so much out of it a few years later."
A strong foundation for mentees
For those just starting their journey, mentorship at mydentist provides invaluable support. Newly qualified dentists benefit from hands-on guidance, shadowing experienced mentors and building their confidence with structured learning. It’s a gradual process designed to ease the transition from training to independent practice, ensuring clinicians feel capable and supported at every step of the way.
One of the key benefits of our mentorship programme is that we remove the financial burden of supervision. Unlike traditional setups where mentees have to pay for mentorship, mydentist fully funds the programme, allowing new dentists to focus on learning and development without the stress of additional costs.
Confidence, career growth and community
Mentorship isn’t just about technical skills - it’s about building confidence, fostering professional relationships and creating a sense of belonging. As Assad Shah shared: "Every day I learn something new. Over time, you start to realise you're making fewer mistakes, working more effectively and feeling more confident in your ability."
At mydentist, we believe mentorship should be a two-way process, where both mentors and mentees grow through shared learning. For mentors, it’s an opportunity to develop leadership skills and gain fulfilment from guiding the next generation of dental professionals. For mentees, it’s a chance to gain hands-on experience, expert advice and long-term career guidance.
Looking ahead
As we continue to grow, we are committed to expanding our support, refining our training programmes and ensuring that every clinician has the guidance they need to succeed.
